How will AI impact personal fitness in the future?
In the history of personal fitness, technology has often taken center stage, evolving from simple tools like hand-held dumbbells to elaborate machines designed to work every muscle in the human body. As our understanding of human physiology and the benefits of exercise has grown, so too has the sophistication of our workout equipment and methods. From the days of calisthenics and jogging to modern high-intensity interval training and virtual exercise classes, the quest for physical fitness has constantly absorbed the latest technological advances to help us achieve our health goals more effectively.
🏋️♂️ Get ready for robot trainers: Imagine having a personal trainer who not only knows your workout routine inside out but also constantly adapts and personalizes it based on your real-time data. AI-powered virtual trainers will interpret biometrics like heart rate, muscle fatigue, and overall performance to give instant feedback and adjustments. They'll help you push just hard enough to improve, without overdoing it and risking injury. The future application of AI seems to promise a scenario where your "robot gym buddy" could theoretically provide more precise guidance than a human trainer, as well as constant availability at a lower price.
📊 Data-driven workouts will be the new norm: The phrase "listen to your body" will take on a new meaning as AI technologies use data to shape how you exercise. Wearables will track not just steps and heartbeats but will delve deeper into analytics such as sleep quality, nutrition, stress levels, and even genetic factors. Consequently, AI will process this mountain of personal data to design workout plans that are not only scientifically optimized for your physique but also align with your lifestyle and goals. This will revolutionize the concept of personalized fitness, moving away from one-size-fits-all regimens to truly tailored strategies that evolve daily.
🔮 Predictive health is the next frontier: With AI's ability to aggregate and analyze trends from global user data, it can identify potential health issues before they become problematic. Suppose your AI system notices that you're showing early signs of a condition that could be mitigated with certain exercises. In that case, it will not only modify your workout to include these preventive measures but also advise you to consult a healthcare provider.
⚙️ Tech hiccups won't stop us, but they might slow us down: While these advances paint an enticing picture of the future, the path to AI-integrated fitness isn't without potential obstacles. Issues such as data privacy, software reliability, and the digital divide could hinder progress. AI is only as good as the data it's fed, and biased algorithms could lead to less effective or even harmful workout recommendations. It's imperative that developers and fitness professionals keep an eye on these challenges to ensure that the integration of AI into fitness is equitable and safe for all.
🚴♀️ Sustainable fitness habits, powered by AI: One compelling vision of AI-enhanced fitness is the cultivation of lifelong, sustainable exercise habits. AI platforms could evolve to act as lifelong fitness companions, nudging you toward healthier patterns and keeping you on track with gentle reminders and encouragement. Over time, these AI systems could potentially recognize when you're likely to fall off the wagon and suggest interventions to keep you motivated, making the maintenance of fitness levels an integral and nearly effortless part of everyday life.
As we've traversed the landscape of AI's potential influence on personal fitness, we've seen its capability to transform the way we exercise—from ultra-personalized workouts to virtual communities and preventive health measures. While the technological trek to a fully AI-integrated fitness experience promises an exhilarating adventure, it's worth reflecting on how likely we are to see these changes manifest in our daily routines. Will we soon find ourselves taking workout advice from intuitive machines, or is the future of AI and fitness more of a dreamy sci-fi concept?
In the real world…
AI technology is already being used in gymnastics through a system called Judging Support System (JSS). The JSS, which uses high-definition cameras and AI software, has been successfully used in the 2023 World Championships to analyze and judge gymnasts' performances in real time.
Mojawa has recently unveiled a new set of headphones with an AI fitness coach built in.
Some are even using ChatGPT itself as a personal trainer replacement, both to generate workout routines and also to provide specific instructions for how to perform certain exercises.
The Texas-based “smart gym” company Lumin Fitness offers sensors and AI trainers built into the workout experience.
What do the experts say?
"Imagine a fitness app that turns your living room into a virtual gym or takes you on an immersive outdoor run through augmented reality. The future of AI fitness apps will likely incorporate AR to increase user engagement and create dynamic, interactive workout environments. Users can follow AI-generated trainers in real time while receiving visual cues and feedback, making the training experience more engaging and enjoyable."
— Aman Mishra, quoted in Fitness Industry Looks to AI to Bring in Consumers, Profits in PYMNTS
"There's a reason I didn't turn to ChatGPT for a workout program. Sure, I can add specific metrics to a ChatGPT prompt, but it's essentially ‘autocomplete on steroids’ and will churn out a response by predicting what the next best word should be. And when I told ChatGPT to create a routine around my theoretically twisted ankle, it recommended exercises while standing and bearing weight, which could make an injury worse."
— Imad Khan, from Can an AI-Powered Fitness App Outperform a Human Trainer? in CNET
"New research finds that a mobile weight loss application that uses artificial intelligence to mine personal data and provide encouragement and personalized advice is more effective when paired with a human touch.
…[In one study,] customers guided by human coaches and AI lost an average of about 5 pounds over three months, while those coached only by AI lost a little less than 3 pounds on average."
